Professor Jasson CHIANG (江界山) was born in 1949 in Chiayi, Taiwan, and passed away in 2015. He dedicated his life to the development of sports and exercise science in Taiwan. He co-founded the Asia Association of Coaching Science (AACS), making significant contributions and becoming a revered figure in the field of coaching science in Taiwan and East Asia.
In his youth, Professor Chiang was a long jump athlete. He later actively participated in Olympic movement, served the sports community, built extensive networks, and pursued further education in the United States, earning MS and PhD from Oregon State University. Upon returning to Taiwan, he taught at Chinese Culture University for many years.
In academia, Professor Chiang specialized in exercise physiology, publishing numerous journal articles and organizing multiple international scientific conferences. He led various research projects funded by the Taiwan National Science Council and the Sports Administration of the Ministry of Education. Passionate about nurturing talent, he recruited renowned experts, introduced new concepts, and established Taiwan's first graduate institute of Coaching Science, creating a prestigious academic platform for sports. He also planned and constructed the sports center at Chinese Culture University, setting a benchmark for other institutions.
Professor Chiang was actively involved in Olympic movements, sports injury prevention, sports health, military fitness, and introduced American strength and conditioning training programs. He enthusiastically participated in various sports organizations, including the Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee, the Sports Federation, the University Sports Federation, the Athletics Association, and the Baseball Association, and played a crucial role in promoting Taiwan's sports policies.
In June 2012, along with scholars from Taiwan, Japan, Korea, and China, he co-founded AACS in Taipei. AACS aims to promote and maintain the professionalism and value of sports coaching in Asia through the development of theory and practical coaching. It also seeks to bridge the gap between coaching and sports science, enhancing coaching practices and improving athletes' performance. The association has held executive board meetings and academic conferences at Hokkaido University in Japan, Shanghai University of Sport in China, and Korea National Sport University.
To commemorate President Chiang, the executive board members of the AACS hope to establish the Jasson CHIANG Memorial Award at AACS conference. After being severely impacted by COVID-19, AACS activities were suspended for several years. Now, with the assistance of the Taiwan Sports Coach Association, the executive board members and scholars interested in the development of coaching science will gather again in Taipei to rebuild AACS's activities and establish the Jasson CHIANG Memorial Award, hoping to inspire future talents and ensure the legacy of Professor Chiang's contributions.
